The National Association of Field Training Officers continues preparing your Field Training Unit for the challenges of 21st century policing by providing a comprehensive and client-oriented curriculum. NAFTO, in conjunction with the John H. Stamler Police Academy, is proud to offer our Basic Field Training Officer Course in Scotch Plains, NJ, a 25-minute drive from Newark Liberty International Airport. This training is designed for personnel entering Field Training Units in Patrol, Detention, Communications, and Support Services.
Basic FTO School
Field Training Officers train and evaluate career candidates in preparation for solo duty in law enforcement, corrections, and communications. Our Basic 3 Day School will provide the new FTO with the tools necessary to train and evaluate career candidates during the field training process.
NAFTO's Basic FTO School is a nationally recognized model for preparing experienced patrol officers for a career in field training. The San Jose Model, Reno Model, and Modified San Jose Model are discussed. The course focuses on the FTO themselves, and how they can improve their interpersonal and instruction skills to increase trainee retention. The classes incorporate a variety of learning activities, including group work, case law discussion, and video scenarios.
This 24-hour class covers such topics as Intro to FTO, Adult Learning, Generational Leadership, Standardized Evaluations Guidelines, Ethics, Equal Opportunity Employment, Civil Liability, and Officer Safety. Each block of study is directed at the Field Training Officer, and ways to improve their teaching, work product, and approach to today's Officer in Training. Information includes motivating different generations of trainees, career survival for the FTO, and liability pertaining to evaluations. Unlike most schools, NAFTO does not focus on a single model of field training. NAFTO offers techniques and skills that can be applied within any training model.
Seating limited to the 1st 45 applicants, no exceptions. This class will sell out and it will sell out quickly.
Cost: - $375 per student, which includes training materials and 1 year membership to NAFTO. Refunds are offered more than 30 days from class minus a $20 processing fee. Refunds are not offered within 30 days of class, but student substitution is permitted at any time prior to class. NAFTO is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational and professional association concerned with apprenticeship training.

Officers will learn basic bicycle patrol techniques in this course. Instruction will include safe bicycle operation, laws governing bicycles as vehicles, nomenclature, riding techniques, defensive cycling, nutrition, first aid, fitness, equipment repair and maintenance. Students will demonstrate competency through practical application of basic riding skills.
PLEASE NOTE: This course requires a moderate amount of physical activity.
Anyone with health concerns should consult their physician before attending.
Please be advised that anyone who cannot keep up will be dismissed from the class
to ensure the safety of the instructor, that officer, and all course participants.
Mandatory Equipment: Mountain bike (duty bike preferred) with foot retention device; approved ANSI and/or Snell bicycle helmet; shatter resistant eye protection; a pair of bicycle gloves; water bottle.
Mandatory Attire: Appropriate duty uniform (bike pants/shorts) or shorts (weather permitting), rain gear (optional), polo shirt, sweatshirt, sweatpants, lightweight pants, sneakers or low top boots, riding shoes (optional) and a pair of latex gloves.

This course will be devoted to the requirements for operating and maintaining a safe and secure detention facility, as set forth in Chapter 34 of the New Jersey Administrative Code. The "Cell Block Management" segment will review sound security practices and the minimum requirements for supervising detainees will be stressed. The "Suicide Awareness" segment will focus on such topics as the profiling of suicidal detainees, the screening and supervision of such detainees, the various ways in which detainees may attempt suicide, the liability factor and appropriate policy and procedures for handling suicide attempts.

*A five-day course of instruction which focuses on the documentation and processing of a crime scene.
Topics covered includes crime scene photography, proper evidence collection, latent print recovery, bloodstain recognition/documentation and shooting scene documentation. Participants will have a basic knowledge and understanding on how to photograph, document and process various types of crime scenes including but not limited to burglaries, death investigations, motor vehicle accidents, shooting investigations, and vehicle processing. This course is open to UNION COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ONLY. Established in Memphis in 1988, CIT is an innovative police based first responder program that has become internationally known as the ?Memphis Model, providing law enforcement based crisis intervention training to help individuals suffering from mental illness. CIT is typically based in the patrol division of the police department. In addition, CIT works in partnership with those in mental health professions to promote collaborative efforts to create and sustain more effective interaction among law enforcement, mental health providers, individuals with mental illness, and their families. CIT has been shown to help reduce the stigma of mental illness. Most significantly, CIT has been shown to reduce injury and death to both officers and individuals with mental illness. Course: From Dusk Til Dawn- Looking Beyond the Stop This course was developed in hopes of giving the officer and first line supervisor more insight and additional perspective when conducting proactive patrol operations as well as routine patrol functions. This three-day course will take the officer-student from the initial response through the report to the Courtroom. The course is designed for all levels of experience, but geared towards individuals assigned to patrol functions. The student will be taught through classroom presentation and hands-on tactics to conduct safe motor vehicle and pedestrian stops. The student will have the benefit of receiving instruction from experienced narcotic officers and supervisors, who have conducted and supervised thousands of major criminal investigations. Non-Fatal Strangulation (NFS):NFS is one of the most lethal forms of IPV as unconsciousness may occur within seconds and death within minutes. Discussion on how to ID obvious and the inconspicuous signs of NFS; pertinent questions to ask about symptoms of NFS; understanding the delayed consequences of NFS; and how to assess for TBI (traumatic brain injury).
